Turmeric Root Powder

Turmeric root powder is one of the healthiest spices around, and it has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. In fact, it was prominently used in Ayurvedic healing as far back as 500 B.C. 1

Today, turmeric -- a close relative of ginger -- is used as a spice to favor a variety of foods, and it’s a major ingredient in curry powder. It is also commonly used as an alternative medicine. What Is Turmeric Root Powder Good For?

The list of amazing health benefits of turmeric root powder is much too long to discuss in this article. But here are just a few science-backed benefits of this ancient superfood.

Supports the immune system. Without a strong immune system, you are vulnerable to many types of infections and diseases. Curcumin, the chemical that gives turmeric powder its unique orange-yellow color, has been shown to have a significantly positive effect on the immune system in clinical research studies. Specifically, it has been shown to modulate certain aspects of the immune system -- such as activation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells -- that help boost immunity. May protect the heart. The curcumin content in turmeric has also been shown to have a cardiovascular protective effect due to its antithrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger Root Powder

Ginger root powder is a popular spice used to flavor ginger breads, cakes, and other baked goods. It is also often added to fried rice and other recipes. Indeed, it is one of the most commonly used spices in the world. 1

It is believed that ginger was first used some 5,000 years ago in Asia before eventually spreading to India, Africa, the Caribbean, and other areas. 2

What Is Ginger Root Powder Good For?

Presumably first used as a food, ginger’s many health-promoting properties became evident to the ancients and evolved into an important herb in Ayurveda, a Hindu system of medicine. Traditional Ayurvedic texts recommended ginger for a variety of issues, such as joint discomfort and digestive ailments. They even recognized ginger as a “superfood”, a status it still holds not only for Ayurvedic proponents, but for millions of health-conscious people around the world. 3

Research has discovered that gingerols, the main bioactive compounds in ginger, may be responsible for many of the health benefits long attributed to this spice. Gingerols have been shown to have powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, especially 6-Gingerol. This can help keep free radicals from accumulating in cells and causing oxidative stress. (Oxidative stress is associated with many conditions, including heart disease and cancer.)  4

Some of the health benefits of ginger root may include:

Nausea: Multiple clinical research studies suggest ginger root may relieve nausea and vomiting, particularly chemo-therapy or pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. 5, 6

Type 2 diabetes: One of the most prominent features in type 2 diabetes is the tendency for blood glucose levels to rise higher than normal, which is why managing or regulating these levels is so important. Turns out, ginger root powder may help. In one small study, type 2 diabetic participants given 2 grams of ginger powder per day saw a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose levels in just 12 weeks. This was just a small study, however, and more research is needed.  7

Weight loss: There have been numerous animal and human studies indicating that ginger root may encourage weight loss and reduce body mass index (BMI). One of the reasons for this potential weight loss effect is due to ginger root’s antiinflammatory properties. (Obesity triggers systemic low-grade inflammation.) 8, 9, 10

Cholesterol: Abnormal cholesterol levels is associated with increased risk of heart disease, a condition that kills an estimated 610,000 men and women in the U.S. every year. In a recent study, participants with abnormally high levels of fat (triglycerides and cholesterol) were given high dosages (5 grams) of ginger-pasted powder every day for 3 months. The results? Their LDL (bad) cholesterol levels dropped more than 17%! 11, 12

Yes, there is some scientific and anecdotal evidence regarding the potential health benefits of vanilla. Indiginous people used vanilla as medicine for thousands of years to calm upset stomachs, treat asthma, ease congestion, and more. 2

Let’s start with its nutritional value.

Because vanilla is typically used as a flavoring rather than a food, the amount of nutrients you obtain from consuming it is difficult to determine. In general, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract contains: 3

Help Manage Diabetes: Blood sugar surges can be difficult for a diabetic to control, but there is evidence that vanilla may help. In one study, researchers gave mice a high glucose diet followed by 12.5 to 50 mg vanillin (a synthetic form of vanilla) for 15 days and noted a significant drop in blood glucose levels compared to the controls. Though more research is needed, this study suggests vanilla may help you manage blood sugar levels in diabetes. 4

Support Healthy Cholesterol Levels: In the study above, researchers observed that those same mice given 12.5 to 50 g of vanillin for 15 days experienced a significant reduction in total cholesterol and triglycerides and an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol. As high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, it is possible that vanilla may help. 5

Improve Cognitive Function: Several animal models have been used to determine the possible effects of vanillin on neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease. In one study, researchers produced Parkinson’s disease symptoms in mice and then treated them with vanillin for 40 days. They observed that vanillin appeared to ease neurological and behavioral symptoms compared with controls. Another study appeared to show the same results when vanillin was administered to mice with Alzheimer’s disease. 6, 7

Several animal studies suggest maca root may improve exercise endurance, while  a small study using male cyclists indicated that taking maca extract for 14 days improved their athletic performance. 7, 8

The other group received placebo. At the end of the 12 days, researchers observed that the rats that received 10% noni juice experienced a marked decrease in hepatotoxic lesions in the liver. Rats given a placebo experienced a progression of these lesions. Researchers suggest this effect may be due to noni’s ability to inhibit the inflammatory response and suppress elevated liver enzymes, thus protecting the liver. 7

Is Noni Good For Skin?

Some studies indicate that noni may be good for the skin, especially when applied topically. In a 2012 study, 49 women ages 38 to 55 years were given 3 skin care products, each made from a different part of the noni tree, and told to apply them daily to their face and neck for 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks, researchers observed that these women experienced significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crows feet). Skin elasticity was also much improved. No skin irritation was present. 8

No studies exist on the possible effectiveness of noni for the skin when taken orally. However, noni fruit does contain antioxidants that dermatologists and other experts believe may help maintain healthy skin. 9

Is Noni Good For Hair Growth?

No, there is no evidence that noni fruit powder has any effect on hair growth.

Is Noni Good For Blood Pressure?

A few studies indicate that noni juice may lower blood pressure in those who suffer from hypertension.

In a 2019 study, researchers divided 88 subjects into 4 groups. Each group was instructed to drink three portions of one of the following beverages in one-hour intervals: 30 mL noni juice, 200 mL chokeberry juice, energy drink, or water. The noni juice drinkers experienced a significant decrease in systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure as compared to those who drank other beverages. These results indicate noni juice may be effective for lowering blood pressure, though more research is needed. 10
